Stuff you can't forget

You never know when you’ll need to remember some detail. And you probably think you will. But you won’t.

So append it. It’s effortless to strike it when you’re sure you don’t need it anymore, but until then, it’s there in case you do.

You probably won’t remember once you get to the paint store, but Appended will.

Track symptoms

When one of the kids wakes up with a fever, append it: the time, the temperature, what you gave them. Tag it #sick.

If it gets worse, you already have a timeline to show the doctor. If it doesn’t, it scrolls out of sight and you never think about it again.

Search #sick for the whole timeline, ready for the doctor.

Take turns (movie night)

Every movie night, Append the movie you watched, or even share the movie’s IMDb page for quick lookup. Include who picked it before you save: picked by Mom #movienight and see who’s up next to choose.

Jot down ideas for future movie nights the same way, and search for #movienight idea when it’s your turn. To filter out past picks, search #movienight idea -pick.

Share the movie from Safari or IMDb straight to Appended.
Search #movienight -idea: Mom picked last, so it’s Theo’s turn.

Take recommendations

Someone mentions a book, a restaurant, a show you’d love. Don’t stop to decide which app it belongs in. Append it, maybe tag it #recommendation, and get back to the conversation.

Strike it once you’ve tried it, and the ones you haven’t are still waiting.

Strike the ones you’ve tried; the rest are still waiting.

Keep a book log

When you finish a book, log it in Appended. Maybe include a sentence or two about what it was, what you thought of it, and a grade. A- #booklog.

It’s not for anyone else, so be as honest and unfair as you like. Years later, search #booklog and you’ll remember not just what you read, but how it felt.

Later on, use the Shortcuts app to send all your #booklog notes to a friend, or a chat bot, to get recommendations.

Finish a book, share it from Goodreads.
Search #booklog for every book you’ve read, and how you felt about it.

Remember what they said

Kids say the funniest things, and you’re sure you’ll never forget them. You will. Append it the moment it happens, as a quote.

There’s nothing to tag. Search their name and you have years of their best lines, in order.

No tags needed: search June and every quote is there.

Find it offline

Whenever you check in somewhere, append the hotel’s name, address, and room number. No need to tag, no need to search: it’s right there when you raise your wrist.

Your notes live on your Apple Watch, so they’re there on a run, at the front desk, or anywhere you’ve left your phone behind, with or without a connection.

Your room number is the newest note, right there on your wrist.

Maintenance log

Time passes differently as a homeowner, so when it feels like you just changed the air filter, odds are good it’s been longer than you think.

Reminders are great for notifying you that it’s time, but Appended helps you remember how long it’s been, so you can rest easy knowing that, no, it wasn’t just a week or two ago that you replaced the battery.

The same goes for:

  • Rotating the mattress
  • Replacing a light bulb
  • Changing the water or HVAC filter
  • Testing the smoke detector
  • Inflating the family’s bikes’ tires
Search #batteries to see how long each one really lasts.

Borrowing and lending

Keep track of whom you’ve lent stuff to in a single place you can count on. Every now and then, take a quick peek and see if anything slipped through the cracks. No more feeling like you’ve forgotten something but can’t remember what!

And no more feeling terrible when you forget to return something you borrowed. Append it when it changes hands, strike it when it changes back.

Appended is on your wrist, so you can check before you head out the door.

Append what you’ve lent out and to whom. Strike it when you get it back.
Append what you’ve borrowed and from whom. Strike it when you return it.

Messages

Want to send someone a message but also remember it for yourself?

Easy. Append it, then swipe right to share. Swipe again to share with someone else.

Append a note, share it as a message
Send it to Messages, and it’s still in Appended

Random thoughts

The best way to use Appended is just to append tidbits or thoughts as they come. Don’t think too much about it: if there’s a chance you’ll want to remember it – for any reason at all – jot it down.

At the end of the day, take a look at your recent notes and maybe something there will delight you. Maybe seeing a note will serve as a reminder to do something about it, or maybe it’ll just make you smile remembering how your day’s been.

Better still: scroll to a note from long ago and remember what was going on in your life on that random Tuesday. And maybe that’ll encourage you to append more stuff tomorrow.

Life is really complicated. There’s no reason for your notes app to be.
